DMITRY BYALIK

New York City-based leather sculptor active since 2011. Having evolved my practice from early leather accessories, custom costumes, and collaborations with costume designers and fashion stylists into a dedicated fine art focus, my work now exists entirely within the realm of contemporary sculpture.
My process relies on advanced wet-molding, a meticulous technique of shaping garment-weight vegetable- and chrome-tanned hides while pliable to capture extreme anatomical precision and surface detail. Through expert leather forming, I transform flat hides into intricate, hollow three-dimensional forms entirely without internal armatures, holding their precise shape through innovative material manipulation and structural mastery rather than rigid frames to create hyper-surrealistic sculptural art.
